Vinyl is Made for Commercial Sign Makers
Vinyl is the single most important construction material for sign makers bar none. It’s used for making interior lobby signs and in exterior storefront signage and for putting brand messages on cars and delivery trucks in what our industry calls vehicle wraps. But what is this stuff exactly? And just where did it come from?
Who Invented Vinyl Material?
Dr. Waldo Semon, a scientist working for an American automotive tire maker in the 1920s was trying to develop an adhesive that would bond rubber to metal. He experimented with all types of materials by mixing them with chemicals and applying heat. This led to the development of Polyvinyl Chloride, also known as PVC, which did not make very nice tires but could be used to create lightweight piping for household plumbing and a versatile new fabric we call vinyl.

Vinyl is known for its rugged durability which makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. It can withstand harsh weather conditions, such as rain, hot sun, and extremely cold temperatures without breaking down. Special inks have been developed to colour vinyl and they’ve also been stress-tested and refined over the years. Their combined durability and permanence ensure that vinyl signs will maintain their youthful appearance for many years, and many weather cycles to come.

Can Vinyl Wall Murals be Recycled, and Reinstalled?
The answer is a soft no. The only real downside to custom-printed vinyl wall murals is that renters usually their custom artwork behind when they vacate the premises after their lease expires. While it is not possible to peel off vinyl applications and to save the material for use elsewhere, as the mural was made to specific dimensions which are unlikely to be the same at its next installation. Additionally, the vinyl will suffer some loss of quality in the transfer.
Window Graphics Put Vinyl Art on Glass
Vinyl lettering on glass makes artful messaging worthy of any store window. A synthetic fabric, vinyl can be cleaned with a damp cloth and can be printed with various designs and colors that won’t fade. Like wall murals, window graphics can be customized with any design, pattern, or artwork. They can be printed in full color, making them suitable for branding, decoration, or promotional purposes.
Wall and window graphics both have an adhesive backing which allows them to stick to the desired surface. The bond is not strong as most window graphics are timely and designed to be removed without leaving residue or causing damage to the underlying surface. Both types of graphics are applied by removing the backing paper and carefully placing the vinyl on the desired surface. Once deployed, they can be trimmed or cut for additional flexibility, but we typically get things letter-perfect the first time.
Window graphics are designed with transparency in mind to allow light to pass through, whereas wall graphics are typically opaque. Additionally, window graphics may need to consider factors like visibility from the outside, reflections and UV protection. Sign Source Solution takes extra steps and uses clear tape to seal the edges of the material on the window which insure no foreign particles, dirt and grime will creep into the sign, between the vinyl and the glass.
Vinyl was created for sign makers because it can be so easily cut into various shapes, sizes, and designs, making it highly versatile for creating different types of signs. It can be used for lettering, logos, graphics, and even full-color printed signs, on walls or windows. Although vinyl has many applications in our modern world, it has become the single most important construction material for commercial sign makers and whenever possible, Sign Source Solution uses the best vinyl on the market.
